Green Shopping Tips
- Choose items that contain the least amount of packaging. .
- Bring your own shopping bags: plastic bags are made from petrochemicals and very few are actually recycled. Recent research has discovered an explosive increase in human-generated debris (much of it plastic bags) in oceans, is creating unparalleled opportunities for the spread of invasive species and choking many endangered marine mammals, such as leatherback turtles, to death.
- If you do use plastic bags for vegetables or groceries, reuse them, then recycle them at supermarket drop-off bins.
- Purchase high quality items that will last longer.Bring your own bag when shopping, and decline plastic bags offered to you.
- Use non-disposable items, like handkerchiefs or your own chopsticks, instead of disposable paper or plastic products.
- Avoid disposable products such as razors, pencils, and lighters. Instead choose products that can be refilled and reused!
- Buy heavily used items in bulk, such as detergent, oil and rice. Bring your own container to reduce the use of plastic bags/ packaging.
- Choose rechargeable batteries and long life light bulbs.
- Only buy as much food as you need to reduce the amount of food thrown out into landfills or storm drains.
- Avoid using plastic straws. They are usually unnecessary and often end up polluting waterways and harming marine life.
- Buy big water bottles instead of small ones - they use less resources to make.
