Household hazardous wastes are your left-over products that contain hazardous chemicals. Some of these products include: paint, Oil, used batteries, pesticides, cleaners, stains, varnishes, etc.
| Hazardous Household Waste - Green Tips
Before purchasing
- Ask friends, family and neighbors if they have any leftover products that you can use.
- Purchase only what you need; buying in bulk might lead to throwing items away later, costing both money and the environment.
- Choose products that are chemical free or look for substitutes.
- Use rechargeable batteries so you don't have to keep buying (and throwing away) batteries.
When using household products
- Always keep them in the original container. This will help to identify the product and chemicals it contains. If the container starts to corrode then repackage the item and clearly label it.
- Never store chemicals in used food containers without clear labeling! Somebody might accidentally ingest them which could lead to health problems and possibly death.
- Never mix chemicals as they might react, causing ignition or explosion. Moreover, chemicals that are mixed may not be able to be reused or recycled.
Instead of throwing away
- If you have left over products offer them to friends, family and neighbors for use. Look at the label for any disposal directions and strictly follow them!
- Allow water-based liquids to evaporate off. If the product is not water-based, then use sawdust or cat litter to absorb excess liquid.
- Ask in shops or take the remaining product directly to a special disposal facility. Make sure it is carefully packaged to prevent leaking.
