Green Home Consumer Guide

Electric Appliances

· Air-conditioners, refrigerators, and TVs account for over 60% of total household electricity consumption.
· Please buy CFC-free or Freon-free appliances. Make sure that your refrigerator, air conditioning system, drinking water cooler etc. do not contain CFCs or other ozone depleting substances.
Please do not leave appliances in standby mode. TVs, computers, printers, fax-machines, stereos, VCD/DVD players, etc. all come with a passive mode, which consumes energy without you even noticing. Although standby mode seems like it would save energy, products on standby may account for as much as 10% of the total energy use in your household! So next time you finish watching TV, please turn it off or unplug it. With over 300 million TVs in China, if everyone did this, it would save 1.8 billion kilowatt hours of electricity!
You can also tone down the brightness of your TV and computer screens. Bright screens consume more energy and can be damaging to the eyes, especially for children.
