| Wild Yak |
 |
The wild yak is a national Class-A protected animal. The ancestor of the domesticated yak, the wild yak is larger and stronger than its more common descendent. As a result of designated protection, wild yak numbers and their habitat areas are gradually recovering. Unfortunately, on the edge of the region in which they are found, male wild yaks will often “kidnap” domesticated yaks, diluting the purity of the wild yak breed. To prevent this from occurring, the only effective strategy is to strengthen and improve management practices to minimize contact between the domesticated and wild yak populations.
